Created during an art course in Santa Fe, New Mexico, this large-format work by Kathleen Roby, a contemporary abstract painter, draws its inspiration from the desert landscapes of this mountainous region. The warm hues of the desert, the Sangre de Cristo mountains, the pink granite rocks, and the presence of Appaloosa horses all contributed to her palette and pictorial language.
The work also recounts an unexpected encounter with a small bird that had strayed into the studio. After gently picking it up and leading it outside, Kathleen watched the bird linger in her hands for a few seconds before flying away, leaving behind five small feathers. Incorporated into the composition, in its lower left section, these feathers become a tangible reminder of this precious moment.
Evoking the silhouette of a horse accompanied by a small bird, THE STALLION AND THE SPARROW celebrates the encounter between nature, freedom and those unexpected moments that leave a lasting impression.
