As part of her artistic exploration of Vietnam, Kathleen Roby created a series of three works inspired by the colorful world of đèn lồng , the iconic lanterns of Hội An. This city, one of the artist's favorites, profoundly marked her with its light, colors, and warm atmosphere.
In Hoi An sous les đèn lồng I , spontaneous gestures, ink marks, and touches of color evoke the profusion of lanterns illuminating the city streets. Pigments, pastels, and layered materials create a vibrant composition where light seems to emerge from the raw cotton canvas.
Beyond their visual richness, the lanterns become for Kathleen Roby a metaphor for the bonds that unite human beings. The history of Hội An, shaped over centuries by exchanges between different cultures, nourishes her reflection on cooperation, mutual support, and openness to others. This series thus evokes the light that human beings ignite in one another and the connections that can unite us beyond our differences.
