Literally buried under piles of books in Kathleen Roby's studio, this work resurfaced by chance while the artist was preparing her Quiet Matter series. Upon rediscovering it, she chose to give it a second life by incorporating new collages, as if time itself had played a part in its history.
 The title Unearthed , meaning "to unearth" or "to bring to light," evokes this unexpected discovery. The work seems less to have been created than to have been found, like a fragment of memory or a vestige already bearing the traces of its passage through time. Marble dust, rust, ash, and cheesecloth reinforce this organic and tactile dimension.


 For Kathleen Roby , some works seem to simply wait in the shadows for the right moment to reveal their secrets. Unearthed is a prime example of this encounter between chance, matter, and intuition.
